The State Russian Drama Theater was founded in 1938. In the year of the 100th anniversary of the death of Mikhail Lermontov, the theater was given the name of the classic of Russian literature. The first work of the theater was a performance based on Pogodin's play “The Man with a Gun” in November, 1938, and then “T Kremlin Chimes”. The repertoire of the theater was different and included classical works, dramas and comedies, children's plays.
The theatrical legends of Grozny were linked with the names of L.Bronevoi, I.Smoktunovsky, S.Bondarchuk, R.Bykova, M.Babkina and many others who formed the glory and pride of the theater.The names of many famous directors are connected with the theater: I.Shapovalenko, M.Soltsaev, A.Isaev, E.Krasnitsky. In 1994, due to the destabilization of the political situation in the republic, the theater's activity was suspended. The idea of the revival of the Russian Theater in the Chechen Republic arose in 2003 during the meeting of the First President of the Chechen Republic, Akhmat-Khadji Kadyrov with the theater company. In 2005 the theater resumed its work.In June 2012, a new building of the State Russian Drama Theater named after. M.Lermontov was opened. "The Knights of the Caucasus Mountains" was the first performance played on a new stage. This high-profile event for the Chechen Republic and Grozny was attended by high-ranking guests such as the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev and the Head of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov. The opening of the new building was a significant event in the cultural life of the republic, which was expected by all fans of theatrical art.With the opening of the new building, the friendly tours of theatrical collectives from the capital and cities of Russia to Grozny resumed.In general, over the past few years, the Russian State Drama Theater named after M. Lermontov demonstrates the progressive development in all aspects of its activity, fulfilling its special mission in the cultural space of the republic.In the repertoire of the theater there are 17 performances based on works of Russian and world drama, representing a wide range of genres and aesthetic directions, which are interesting for spectators of all age categories: "Marriage of Reckoning", "Dear Daughter", "Save Pushkin's Junkers", "Accompanist", "The only heir", "A Bad Day of Mokhsolt", "Ali Baba and the gold of the bandits", "Following the Snow Queen", "The Crimson Bear", "Visiting the Fairy Tale", "Ansar and Zaza", etc. The Honored Artists of the Chechen Republic such as Zulfiya Nalgiyeva, Sultan Temishev, Musa Ayubov, Akhmed Khamzatov, Alvi Makhauri, Apti Islamgiriyev, Kheda Avzaeva, Viskhan Islamov, Zalina Muzaeva, Rashid Zaitayev, Baisangur Murtazaliyev, Rosa Tsatsaeva, Islam Alaudinov, Malika Sagalova, Khasan Eliskhanov, as well as graduates of the the Chechen State University work here. At present, the theater staff works under the supervision of the director Daaev Vakhakhazhi Buarovich.
